My feel good habits

This is a collaborative post with Plays.org.

I felt inspired to write up this post after listening to the beauty, health and wellness podcast The Emma Guns Show, produced and hosted by Emma Gunavardhana. She is a journalist, podcaster and brand consultant and I find her podcast incredibly inspiring, so I definitely recommend listening to it, and you can find it on many good podcast apps.

Emma often interviews celebrities, beauty and health experts and content creators, and from time to time, she’ll feature the ‘Feel Good Habits’ segment, asking each individual about the things they like to do to make themselves feel good.

So, in this post, I’d like to talk about the things I like to do to make myself feel good. A couple of years ago, I started working on bettering myself and over the last few months, I’ve done a lot to step up my self-improvement and personal development journey by implementing better habits. Here are my top feel good habits.

My morning routine

My morning routine is very important to me and it gets me going. If I didn’t have a proper morning routine, I don’t think I’d be able to have a good start and I wouldn’t be able to keep going throughout the day. My morning routine gets me ready for the day and keeps me disciplined, especially as I work from home.

I wake up, brush my teeth, cleanse my face, shower, moisturise my body, apply toner, moisturiser and SPF on my face, get dressed and style my hair. Then, I make myself a cup of tea, herbal tea or hot water with lemon.

Drinking loads of water

We should all drink plenty of water every day. I normally drink a couple of litres a day. Drinking loads of water prevents headaches and keeps my skin and body hydrated throughout the day.

Getting plenty of sleep every night

I need sleep. Anyone who knows me will understand that I am not a ‘sleep is for wimps’ kind of person. I need plenty of sleep per night - eight hours minimum, but ideally, I like to get to a point where I can get ten hours of sleep every night. I like to listen to podcasts, the radio or the ‘deep sleep sounds’ app to help me get straight to the Land of Nod.

Reading

I’ve always been a bit of a bookworm, and I like to read books in my spare time. Currently, I’m reading Captain Tom’s Life Lessons, which is giving me a lot of perspective on life.

Listening to inspirational podcasts and music

I’m currently on a journey of self-love, self-improvement and personal development, so I find listening to inspirational podcasts helpful. I’ve been listening to the Just Glow With It podcast by Jasmine Shah, which has been motivating me on my journey to a better life. Plus, listening to music (especially on a Friday afternoon) brings me so much joy.

Playing games

I wouldn’t consider myself a gamer, but I definitely like to play games on my smartphone as a form of stress release. I like to play Fruit Splash, Temple Run, Temple Run 2, Colour Switch and Quiz: Logo Game. I’ve also discovered a platform where I can play free games: Plays.org. Play.org offers over 100 games (and more) in a variety of categories. I’m old school so I like the retro arcade games on the site, and I’ve been having a blast playing Neon Invaders and Super Tetris.

However, one thing I’d like to see from Plays.org is a smartphone app so that I could access games on my phone.

Light entertainment

I like watching light entertainment to take my mind off things, such as comedy, reality TV and luxury lifestyle vlogs on YouTube.

Walking

Powerwalking is a form of physical exercise for me and it’s a great way for me to clear my head.

Smiling

Life is too short, so just smile! Practise gratitude and do the things that bring you joy.

Journalling

I’m a writer and journaling is a great way for me to express my feelings, thoughts and emotions.

Putting myself first

One can’t pour from an empty cup. I’ve come to realise the importance of putting my needs first and since I started doing this months ago, I have felt much better and happier within myself.
