5 Simple Hair Care Tips For Winter

Haircare is a topic that I'm still trying to understand. I've had so many issues with my hair over the course of my life so far, so figuring out what's best is still a bit of a learning curve for me.
However, one thing's for sure: hair care isn't something that has to be complicated. I remember when I started researching how to take care of my afro hair when I was a teenager - some of the hair care regimens I'd read about were so taxing and complicated. Well, it doesn't have to be that way. Around this time of year, the cold weather can dry out the skin and the hair, so here are some simple hair care tips for the winter season.

Some of these tips are things that I've tried and tested and have worked for me!

1. Deep condition your hair 1-2 times a week

Honestly, deep conditioning on a regular basis is one of the best things you can do for your hair. It's a bit time-consuming but it's worth it. Apply a deep conditioner - such as Aussie's 3 Minute Miracle Deep Treatment - and leave on for a few hours (wrap your hair in clingfilm). After this time your hair should be really moist. Wash out, then apply a moisturising leave-in conditioner.

2. Avoid heat

Now, there is nothing wrong with a little bit of heat every now and then. If you want to straighten your hair or blow-dry from time to time, then that's fine - just don't make it a regular habit, and make sure you use heat serum beforehand. Too much heat can damage the hair. Even though it's a lot colder at this time of year, try to let your hair naturally air dry. I like to blow dry my hair for special occasions and events, but most of the time, I air dry my hair. For the blow-dried 'blow up' effect, I add leave-in moisturiser or coconut oil (Superdrug's Coconut Oil is amazing!) Then I put my hair in a protective style by diving my hair into sections and plaiting each section or putting hairbands in each part. I do this the night before, then when I wake up in the morning I undo the protective style and comb through.

3. Wrap up

Don't just wrap yourself up to protect the chill - wrap up your hair too. Use a silk scarf to prevent breakage.

4. Consider trying out hair supplements

Now, I'm not a nutritionist or supplement specialist, but hair supplements might be an option you're willing to consider if you struggle with hair growth and/or hair retention.

5. Moisturise the scalp

I have to moisturise my scalp (using Superdrug's Coconut Oil) on a regular basis because it’s prone to dryness, itchiness, flakiness and sensitivity, which is absolutely awful. Winter causes these conditions to get a lot worse so it's important to keep your scalp moisturised at all times.
